Ashvamedha Parva
This is the 89th of the 100 Upa Parvas of the Mahabharata, situated in the Ashvamedhika Parva, the 14th Maha Parva. As the name suggests, this Parva describes YudhiShthira's Ashvamedha sacrifice. The Upa Parva starts with a description of how Yudhishthira is troubled with the sins he has committed due to the war and how Vyasa and Krishna persuade him to undertake the Ashvamedha to absolve himself of the sins of war. This Upa Parva also has the description of Krishna's journey back to Dvaraka to meet with his parents and kinsmen after the war, and his narration of the war to his father Vasudeva, including the death of Abhimanyu in the war. While the Pandavas journey to the Himalayas to retrieve the treasures of Marutta to help them perform the Ashvamedha, Krishna revives the still-born Parikshit, the son of Abhimanyu and Uttara. Arjuna follows the sacrificial horse and encounters many battles, including the one with his son Babhruvahana, wherein he was defeated. The Upa Parva ends with the description of the Asvamedha sacrifice.
The Upa Parva also contains Anu Gita, the conversation between Krishna and Arjuna, a follow-up of the Bhagavad Gita. The Upa Parva also has interesting stories about Marutta and Samvarta, and the Mongoose who blamed Yudhishthira's Ashvamedha sacrifice.
This Upa Parva has 2742 Shlokas organized into 96 Chapters.
