Astika

Astika was an ancient Rishi, and both his parents had the same name - Jaratkaru. The father was Rishi Jaratkaru and the mother was Naga Jaratkaru, (also known as the serpent goddess Manasa), a sister of a great Naga Vasuki. Astika was born to release the virtuous snakes from extinction due to the curse of Naga mother Kadru, a wife of Kashyapa, in the sacrificial fire of Janamejaya, a Kuru king, a descendent of the Pandavas.

It is said that the day Astika saved his ancestors was Shukla Paksha Panchami in the month of Shravan and is since celebrated as the festival of Naga Panchami.
